Whats happening on Day 1 of Snowflakes
The ‘Snow’ begins!
The Snowflakes in Stanthorpe Winter Festival is on its way, and is set to start with a chilly blast on Friday the 5th of July 2019 in the main street of Stanthorpe.
With hopes of waking up to a natural winter snowfall, we invite you to a showcase of ALL THINGS LOCAL on Friday in the CBD. Our Nationally acclaimed Town Crier Bob Townshend will officially open and welcome all to our epic winter festival.
The Main Street of Stanthorpe will be closed to play host to a full day of activities, including a Fashion Parade on the main stage, and entertainment with appearances from the Graniteers, Reloaded, Blue Violets and Peter Salata, as well as many other talented locals. Look out for our roaming costumed characters joining in the fun with Marlay, the Snowflakes Yowie.
Marlay will be taking part in all of the family friendly activities across the day. Register early at Maddie’s Gift Gallery for the chalk art competition where you can take your place at a designated shopfront in High Street to showcase your family chalk art talent.
A huge range of fun family activities will be available, including craft workshops in the Big White Igloo, snowman toss, and bocce. Have a go at Whip Cracking for a chance to win a gift or do some leather stamping.
Local wines and fresh produce will be available, as well as local artisans and artists showcasing their wares. Step inside the massive Mongolian Ger (Yurt), locally created and filled with unique Alpaca wool creations.
The incredibly popular Ice Sculpture Challenge with our local Tradies will begin later in the afternoon. You will be astounded at the creations these tradies and their trusty chainsaws can produce from a block of ice.
As you wander the main street, check out the winter-themed shopfront window displays and be sure to pop in and say hello to our friendly local business owners, while searching for that unique cold-climate gift or keepsake.
Be sure to make the most of the locals secret that the Iceskating rink is open on Thursday the 4th and Friday the 5th of July. These are the quieter days and a great opportunity to skate while the rink is less crowded. It is great value at $20 per session with free entry to the Showgrounds on both Thursday and Friday.
The day ends with a lantern parade down to Rotary Park to read the freezing temperature on the Big Thermometer, followed by a fireworks display. Then head back into the main street to enjoy the best of country hospitality in the local bars and restaurants.
Keep warm, sleep well, and snow-covered dreams to you all, as our snowmen will be up early creating our best ever snowfield for you to enjoy.
